Boone/Blowing Rock Hiking Trail

Client: National Park Service (Boone/Blowing Rock, North Carolina)

This scenic hiking trail is part of North Carolina’s famous Mountains to Sea trail.  This unique project involved a variety of trail techniques, including machine built singletrack, handbuilt singletrack, rock armoring, and staircases built with on-site locust timbers.  Building the staircases with on-site materials was a highlight and a challenge in the back country setting we were working in. Although this project was completed seven years ago I still look back on how stunning the forest and terrain was in that section of the park. The focus of this project was to provide some much-needed maintenance to a popular hiking trail without sacrificing the rugged character of the existing landscape.
